What is "Deviance in Sport"

Deviance occurs in sports when athletes do not conform to accepted standards of behavior.  There are two distinct types of behavior:

Underconformity - behavior does not conform to the generally accepted rules of sport ( e.g., breaking team rules, school rules or competition rules such as use of profanity, hazing, excessive drinking of alcohol, arguing, etc.)

Overconformity - behavior that carries the standards too far when athletes go beyond the normal limits of effort in pursuit of success in high-performance sport(e.g., drastically altering food intake to gain or lose weight, using non - healthy supplements to improve performance); Excessive conforming may also take the form of following the rules and customs of sport too well so that athletes put high - priority on their sport and ignore their families, friends, or neglect their studies.

Main forms of deviance in sport :

  • Rule breaking
  • Violence
  • Crime, corruption and sexual misconduct
  • Racism and social discrimination
  • Performance enhancement drugs
  • Eating disorders
  • Hazing
  • Gambling
